This section motivates the use of flying robots as a support to ground vehicles for search and rescuing operations, since they are able to access to environments where no human or vehicle can, and they can overall reduce the risk for the environment. Rescue tasks may imply the search in heavily destroyed buildings, and the establishment of 3D maps. Non-visible dangers (gas, poison, explosives¿) need to be detected, and victims should be localized. As a result, robots need to be small and very agile, yet their handling and operation should be robust and reliable. The presented platforms are designed to be lightweight and compliant with civil use to overcome import restrictions at customs.
